About Roost

Renovating and building better spaces since 2010.

Roost is a passionate group of individuals who really love houses. We love the technical challenge of building for a climate that has a 75-degree temperature differential over the year.

We bring the artistic vision and craftsmanship needed to give a building beauty and soul.

We love the relationships that we build with our customers as we work with them to figure out exactly what they need to make their house a home.

Services

Major Renovations

We have a love of old houses and want to honour the craftsmanship of the original builders by taking them into the next century. This means considering both a layout that fits with today’s active lifestyles and a building envelope designed for our climate.

Kitchens

As everyone knows, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where some of life’s best everyday moments happen. Our relationships with each other and our food are brought to life in the kitchen and we think this space in your home should contribute to these relationships in an active way.

Additions

Sometimes people love their neighbourhood but have a house that no longer meets their needs. We like working with clients to find a solution that fits their lifestyle. Whether it’s adding an entirely new second floor or expanding the existing footprint, we’re here to help; from concept to completion.

Bathrooms

For some a bathroom needs to be a sanctuary. For others it is a completely utilitarian space that just needs to function well. Either way it’s a room that tends to present the most design challenges and demand the most technical expertise.

New Construction

There’s something nice about starting from scratch. It provides an unmatched opportunity to customize a living space to fit one’s lifestyle. The lessons we’ve learned from the creative constraints of renovations always inform our approach to the design of new spaces. Spaces need to be functional, active and life-affirming. The new spaces we build are also designed to be super energy efficient and last for centuries. We owe it to the next generation.

Basements

Basement renovations are a great opportunity to significantly increase the energy efficiency of the home, create extra living space or even potential revenue from a rental suite. They are also one of the areas of the home most prone to moisture problems and mold when done incorrectly. Doing it properly is much more economical in the long run.

The Team

Coworkers and friends

Roost has always been a company where co-workers become friends. It’s given us the capacity to hold to our values and trust each other, and we’re committed to protecting it as we grow. We believe every member of Roost is an integral part of our creative genius, innovative edge, and rock-solid quality.  Sound like a crew you’d like to work for? Our Values

Shared passion; shared values

Our values reflect our goals in starting Roost and inform how we approach home-building and how we treat our employees and clients. They reflect the future we want for Roost and our wider commmunity.

Our headquarters and the majority of our project work is located on Treaty 1 Territory and the homeland of the Métis Nation. The water we drink and work with comes from Shoal Lake First Nation.

ROOST IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING DIVERSITY

Roost is committed to working with, working for, and supporting all individuals, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or religious and/or cultural background

Respect

Just like buildings and homes, relationships last when they are built with care and trust. Our ability to recognize everyone we work with us an equal player in the design and build process is how we've built our reputation and earned the respect we are given.

Quality

In simplest terms, quality is about durability and performance — how well it's made and how well it performs. While we’re committed to durability and high performance, we also understand that quality encompasses how well-suited the design of the home is to the lifestyle, needs, and aspirations of those who dwell there.

The Roost story

2010: Myron & Jon

Roost started in 2010 when Myron decided to quit his job at another home building company and start working on his own (a very common origin story for building companies). In less than a year, Jon joined as a business partner and Roost officially incorporated. With a long term goal of doing energy efficient large renovations and new builds we began by doing whatever jobs were available.

2018: Jaron joins in

Jaron joined as a business partner in 2018 which again increased our capacity to handle larger jobs and improve our business development. We’ve continued to increase our commitment to energy efficiency, sustainable building practices and being a fulfilling and supportive workplace.

Growth and the future

Profit is essential to the survival of any business, but it’s more important to us that our impact grows in a way that lasts. Like our buildings, we’re proud of what we’ve built, and we want to make a lasting change in our community through the houses we've built and the careers and jobs we’ve provided.

What does this mean practically?

We won’t let our business growth outpace our values. We want to see a vibrant ecosystem of mid-sized builders in our community, serving their clients and caring for their staff without the compromises that bigger companies on an aggressive growth track are forced into.

“We like that they took Fridays off so they could be with their families because we're big on family time. We weren't ever worried that they're only working four days a week because we knew they would be working hard those four days a week.”
