Tuxedo Addition
To prepare this beautiful Tuxedo home for an intergenerational shuffle, we built a major addition in several places on the property. Building on the classic architectural form, it seamlessly grafts in modern style while bolstering function, capacity, and efficiency.
Context
The owners had recently purchased the home from their parents/inlaws and were hoping to update both the style and the function of the home to serve their immediate family needs. This house holds memories, history, and architectural heritage on its own right, and any modifications would need to preserve and compliment the existing style. Naturally, high performance, energy efficiency, and longevity would be central.
Solutions & Design Process
The home owners provided us with an initial design which started the conversation about the design approach. After further conversations about quality of life and stylistic objectives, additional on-site investigations uncovered a number of opportunities for boosting thermal efficiency. To share just one example, specific crawlspace was found to be a major source for heat loss.
Final Design & Build
What we designed and built is an excellent marriage of traditional and contemporary styles. The whole home--not just the components of the addition--is more energy efficient through a number of key interventions. The home is now well into the next chapter of its life, ready to be the gathering place of a close knit extended family for decades to come.
